Thank you for sharing this—a much needed and timely reminder that there are positive environmental stories out there. I just returned from a few weeks in the Peruvian Amazon where we witnessed illegal gold mining (in front of a government checkpoint), mercury poisoning, armed drug traffickers and deforestation (actually seeing the trees being felled)—it was hard to feel optimistic. And so this post really came at a timely moment!

That all sounds brutal, Andrew, and I'm sure it's hard to forget. I'm glad that the stories I've passed on are something of a balm. There really is good work happening everywhere, but it can be hard to see the light sometimes. For more of it, check out the work here on Substack that Sam Matey is doing at The Weekly Anthropocene. There are others, too, but I don't want to throw too much at you. Thanks very much for the note.

After all of these many years, I’ve always pictured Jane in the forest , with heart and determination, and a beautiful mind. Shining a beacon of light on the similarities between chimpanzee and human, and the dire need to understand how our very lives are connected to the environment .Now I sense a certain loneliness out there, knowing she is no longer with us. No doubt, she will always inhabit all that was dear to her.

"You cannot get through a single day without having an impact on the world around you. What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” ( Jane Goodall, 2022).

Notice how our administration, no surprise , did not even mention her name. Her life should be celebrated, her death should be recognized with more than a few words on the news. I did read her comment about Donald Trump from 2016,

“… reminds me of male chimpanzees and their dominance rituals." While she is correct, it is a shame that the press now grabbed a hold of it, as if that was the most impactful thing she has said. I very much appreciate the Rhett Ayers Butler post, an up close and personal glance. And thanks for all the videos, looking forward to watching. As soon as I come in from outside. So much to see right now between peak foliage, mushroom season, migratory birds, oh, and the possibility of Northern Lights tonight, for you too!

The reach and impact of Goodall's work, done seemingly every day for so many decades, is extraordinary. It is sad to imagine the alternate path if we had a different election and an administration focused on the real world and Goodall's immense good work within it. But we'll deal with the chimps we get, and pay attention to the beautiful world as it reveals itself daily. Thanks, Lor

Thank you for the shout-out, Jason. I love how no matter how much great news I find and share, there's always more to discover. You've shared a few news ones here. I'm looking forward to watching these documentaries. Maybe we'll start with the swift fox tonight with the family. 🦊

Of course, Amanda. The swift fox story starts slow, but is worth your time. The UK bee-whisperer is marvelous, and I have a real fondness for the All That Breathes and Fools & Dreamers stories.
